Shopify and Shopify Plus themes
Shopify theme customization
Your theme should fit your business – not the other way around. OUXP customizes Shopify and Shopify Plus themes for brands that have outgrown them: custom sections and templates, Figma designs built to spec, Online Store 2.0 upgrades and cleanup of fragile code. Senior engineers – not marketplace freelancers – build every change in a preview theme, so nothing reaches your live store until you approve it. Small changes start at $500.
Where themes stop fitting the business
Purchased themes are built for the average store. These are the problems that most often bring merchants to us – and what we do about each.
-
The theme can’t do what the brand needs
- What you see
- Your merchandising, bundles or product storytelling need sections the theme doesn’t have.
- What we do
- Build the missing pieces as custom sections and templates – a bundle page, a product comparison, a lookbook.
-
Years of tweaks made it fragile
- What you see
- Every past developer left something behind. Nobody dares touch the code, and simple changes take days.
- What we do
- Untangle old customizations, remove dead code and document the rest – and tell you what can stay as it is.
-
Customizations slowed the store down
- What you see
- App embeds, duplicate scripts and heavy sliders pushed Core Web Vitals into the red.
- What we do
- Remove duplicate scripts and leftover app code, and measure every change we make so it doesn’t slow the page down.
-
The theme is stuck on old architecture
- What you see
- A vintage (pre-Online Store 2.0) theme: no JSON templates, sections can be added only on the home page, no app blocks – and no more feature updates from Shopify.
- What we do
- Upgrade or rebuild on current Shopify architecture and keep your design.
-
The design and the store don’t match
- What you see
- You have Figma files your current theme can’t express.
- What we do
- Build them section by section, mobile layouts included, and flag any design choice that would slow the page before we build it.
-
Every change needs a developer
- What you see
- Your content team files a ticket to swap a banner.
- What we do
- Build sections with settings your team controls in the theme editor, and hand over notes on what still needs a developer.
Also in scope
- Metafields and metaobjects for structured product content
- Apps added to the theme through app blocks, and leftover app code removed
- Mobile layout and accessibility improvements
- Fixes when a theme or app update breaks something
- Bigger storefront features through Shopify Plus development when a theme change isn’t enough
Will customization break or slow your store?
Three risks come with any theme change. Each has a fixed answer in our process.
-
A half-finished change shows up on the live store
How we handle it
We build in a preview theme – a copy of your theme – never in the published one. You review it through a preview link on your own devices, and we publish only after you approve. The replaced theme stays in your theme library, so it can be republished if anything needs undoing.
-
Customizations make pages slower
How we handle it
Every change has a speed budget: the pages it touches must score no worse on Google’s Core Web Vitals after the change than before. We lab-test them in the preview theme on both sides of the change and rework anything that slows them down.
-
The next theme update overwrites your work
How we handle it
We prefer app blocks, metafields and self-contained sections to edits in the theme’s core files. Every customization is documented, including anything that will need attention when the theme vendor releases a new version – and the code lives in your store’s theme, so any developer can pick it up later.
Updating a customized theme without losing your work
Shopify’s theme update copies your theme-editor settings into the new version and tries to bring code edits along, but leaves them out when they conflict with the vendor’s changes – which is common on a customized theme. Those edits then have to be carried forward by hand; we do that in a preview theme, with a checklist on both sides of the update.
What we check before the update
- Your current theme version and what the vendor changed since
- The customizations to carry forward
- App blocks, app embeds and other dependencies
- Content, settings and translations
What you get after it
- Your key shopping journeys tested on the devices we agreed
- A record of what changed and why
- A list of anything to watch in the following weeks
How a customization project runs
Six steps from your request to a live change, with a fixed quote before any work starts.
- 1
Your request
Send the store URL, what you need changed and by when – or talk it through on a call. Screenshots or Figma files help.
- 2
Theme review
We read the code before quoting. Access goes through a Shopify collaborator request – no shared passwords.
- 3
Fixed quote
A fixed price and a delivery date. Larger redesigns are scoped as projects.
- 4
Build in a preview theme
Senior engineers write the code, using AI tools where they save time. A senior engineer reviews every change before it ships.
- 5
QA and publish
Cross-device, performance and accessibility checks, then publish once you approve.
- 6
Ongoing changes
Regular work can roll into a monthly retainer.
What Shopify theme customization costs
Small changes start at $500, most single customizations cost $1,000–$5,000, and redesigns and rebuilds are scoped as projects. Every quote is a fixed price, given after we’ve read your theme code – no open-ended hourly billing. One-off changes don’t need a retainer.
| Approach | Price | Fits when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small change | From $500 | One contained fix or addition: a layout issue, a broken section, a new setting in the editor | If changes come up every month, a retainer covers them |
| Single customization | $1,000–$5,000 for most | The theme is sound and the change is contained: a new section or template, a reworked product page, metafield-driven content | The store keeps the theme’s structure, limits and update path |
| Rebuild on a new theme | Scoped as a project | A well-maintained theme covers most of what you need; we build custom sections for the rest | Less custom code to maintain; the design works within the theme’s patterns |
| Custom theme or full redesign | Scoped as a project | Your design or functionality needs patterns no theme provides | The most freedom, and more code to own, document and maintain |
Theme customization is also included in every retainer tier, from $2,500/month for 20 engineering hours.
Honest note
Custom is not automatically better. If the theme fits the business and you can list what’s wrong, targeted changes usually cost less than a redesign. A redesign earns its place when problems recur across many templates, the catalog has outgrown the theme’s structure or every update needs a workaround.
Not sure which you need? Our guide to choosing between a redesign and targeted fixes walks through the decision, and a store audit ($2,500 flat, written report in 5 business days) gives you a ranked list of fixes before you commit.
What merchants say about our theme work
Most theme projects we take on start on code another developer wrote. These reviews, quoted word for word, come from the Shopify Partner Directory.

How much does Shopify theme customization cost?
Small changes start at $500, and most single customizations – a new section or template, a reworked product page – cost $1,000–$5,000. Full redesigns and theme rebuilds are scoped as projects. Every OUXP quote is fixed and follows a short review of your theme code, so you aren’t billed open-ended hours. If changes come up every month, a retainer from $2,500/month covers them.
How long does a theme customization take?
Most single customizations are quoted within 1 business day and delivered in 3–10 business days. Redesigns and theme rebuilds are scoped as projects with their own timeline. The quote includes a delivery date, so you know when the change will be live before work starts.
Can you customize a theme another developer built?
Yes – most of our theme customization projects start on themes we didn’t build, whether a purchased theme, a vintage theme or a previous agency’s custom work. We review the code before quoting, so surprises show up in the quote, not the invoice. Where earlier work is fragile, we tell you what needs refactoring and what can stay as it is.
Will customizations slow down my store?
Not the way we build them. Every change has a speed budget: the pages it touches must score no worse on Google’s Core Web Vitals afterwards – we lab-test them before and after in the preview theme and rework anything that slows them down. We often improve speed while we work by removing leftover scripts and unused app embeds. If the store is already slow, performance optimization is the better starting point.
Do I need Shopify Plus for theme customization?
No. Theme customization works on every Shopify plan from Basic up – sections, templates, metafields and app blocks are not limited to Plus, and every plan can brand its checkout in the checkout editor. Plus matters for deeper checkout work: apps and Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, and the Checkout Branding API, are available only on Shopify Plus now that checkout.liquid has been retired. That work sits with our Shopify Plus development team.
Will my customizations survive theme updates?
They are built to. We prefer app blocks, metafields and self-contained sections over edits to the theme’s core files, and we document anything that will need attention in a future update. Shopify’s update copies theme-editor settings and tries to carry code edits over, but leaves them out when they conflict with the new version – so when you update, we carry your customizations forward in a preview theme and test the key journeys before it goes live.
Can you match our Figma designs exactly?
Yes. We build from your Figma files section by section, including the mobile layouts, and check the result across devices before you review it. If a design choice would hurt page speed or conversion, we flag it before building, not after, and suggest an alternative that keeps the look. Custom sections come with editor settings, so your team can keep the pages up to date after launch.
What if we need theme changes regularly?
That is what monthly retainers are for. Theme customization is included in every tier – Essential ($2,500/month, 20 hours), Growth ($5,000/month, 45 hours) and Dedicated ($9,500/month, 90 hours or a dedicated engineer) – along with maintenance and bug fixes. Unused hours roll over one month. See retainer and maintenance.
Tell us what your theme needs to do
Talk it through on a strategy call, or send the store URL and the change you have in mind for a fixed quote – most single customizations are quoted within 1 business day.
