2026 platform comparison
BigCommerce vs Shopify Plus
If you run a BigCommerce store and are weighing Shopify Plus: BigCommerce usually costs less to run and builds in more – a lower subscription, a full wholesale portal in the B2B Edition add-on and no gateway fee with Stripe, Adyen or PayPal Braintree. Shopify Plus wins on apps, developers, checkout tooling, international selling and the pace of new features. OUXP moves BigCommerce stores to Shopify Plus – and our free assessment says so when staying is the better deal.
Which should you choose?
Brands rarely leave BigCommerce because it’s broken. They leave when growth runs into the edges of its ecosystem. So weigh three things: what you pay per order, which features you’d otherwise buy as apps and how large an ecosystem your roadmap needs.
Choose BigCommerce if…
- The platform fee decides it – you process through your own gateway and don’t want Shopify’s 0.20% fee on third-party gateways
- You rely on what BigCommerce builds in: product modifiers, customer-group price lists, bulk pricing, several storefronts – even for different brands – in one admin
- Your wholesale buyers need a full portal out of the box – quotes, invoices, shopping lists, sales-rep ordering – via B2B Edition
- You want to own your checkout code by forking BigCommerce’s open-source checkout, and have developers to maintain it
- Your store works, your apps cover what you need and moving wouldn’t pay back yet
Choose Shopify Plus if…
- You’ve hit the ecosystem ceiling: the app, agency or developer you need exists for Shopify but not for BigCommerce
- Checkout conversion matters more than checkout code – Shop Pay, checkout extensions and Shopify Functions, maintained by Shopify
- You’re expanding abroad and want currencies, languages, domains and prices managed per market in one store
- You want the faster-moving platform – two major feature releases a year, AI help in every admin and products sold inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT
- Your B2B is standard – companies, catalogs, net terms – and you’d rather not license a B2B add-on

What does each platform cost to run?
On platform fees alone, BigCommerce usually costs less. The gap comes from two lines: the subscription, and the fee for processing payments through a gateway other than the platform’s own.
| Cost line | BigCommerce | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | From $1,499/month Performance: billed annually, custom quote Scale, for smaller stores: $299/month billed annually ($399 month to month) | $2,300–$2,500/month Three-year or one-year term – $27,600–$30,000 a year |
| Charges that grow with sales | Scale: 0.9% of sales above $33,333 a month, and an automatic move to Performance at $2 million in trailing-12-month sales. Performance: set by contract | A variable, revenue-based fee for high-volume merchants – commonly reported at about 0.35–0.40% of sales above roughly $800,000 a month; confirm yours in writing with Shopify |
| Using your own payment gateway | No fee With embedded providers – Stripe, Adyen, PayPal Braintree, Checkout.com, Worldpay and others – on every plan, and with any provider on a Performance contract. Lower plans pay 0.6–2.0% on other gateways | 0.20% per order On every order through a third-party gateway; no fee with Shopify Payments |
| Extra storefronts | $100/month each on Scale (up to 8); by contract on Performance | 9 included Expansion stores for the same brand, then $300/month per extra store. A separate brand needs its own Plus contract, and every live store needs its own theme license |
| B2B features | B2B Edition: add-on to Performance, priced by quote | Included Core B2B on every paid plan |
Published prices checked on bigcommerce.com and shopify.com in October 2026. BigCommerce introduced new plan names and fees in 2026 – its Enterprise plan is now Performance. Contract prices on both platforms are negotiated, so treat these as starting points, not quotes.
A worked example: $5M a year through your own gateway
Take a store selling $5M a year – about $417,000 a month, below the level where Shopify’s variable fee is commonly reported to start – that wants to keep its existing payment processor rather than switch to Shopify Payments.
- BigCommerce Performance: from about $18,000 a year, with no gateway fee. That is the published $1,499/month floor; a quote at this volume may be higher.
- Shopify Plus: $37,600–$40,000 a year – a $27,600–$30,000 subscription plus $10,000 (0.20% of $5M) for the third-party gateway.
At BigCommerce’s published floor, that’s a gap of about $20,000–$22,000 a year – roughly 0.4% of sales. That gap, plus the one-time cost of the move, is the bar Shopify Plus has to clear through conversion, apps you don’t have to build and engineering time saved. Switch to Shopify Payments and the $10,000 fee disappears, but you change processor and rates – a decision for your finance team, not a footnote.
Costs the table leaves out
- Payment processing. The largest cost line at scale on either platform. Card rates depend on your processor and volume, not on the platform.
- Apps. Features BigCommerce includes – reviews, product modifiers, customer-group pricing – often mean an app subscription on Shopify. Count those before you compare. The Shopify Plus pricing guide breaks down a typical app stack and the all-in annual cost by store size.
- The move itself. A BigCommerce migration typically costs $30,000–$70,000, once. The migration cost guide shows what moves the number.

What’s the same on both platforms?
Many of the usual comparison points don’t separate these two. Both are fully hosted SaaS, so on either platform:
- Hosting, CDN, SSL and scaling for peak traffic are the platform’s job – nothing to provision before Black Friday
- The platform is a PCI DSS Level 1 service provider, so card security sits largely with it
- There are no version upgrades – both update continuously
- Modern APIs connect your ERP, CRM, PIM and 3PL, and power headless storefronts
So ongoing work on either platform means the theme, apps, integrations and custom features – not servers. Both also retire features on their own schedule, and on Shopify, custom apps need a yearly update because each quarterly API version is supported for at least 12 months.
If you’re also weighing a self-hosted platform, where the servers and security are yours, read WooCommerce vs Shopify Plus or Magento vs Shopify Plus.
Which features are built in on each platform?
BigCommerce’s pitch is that more comes in the box. That holds for a handful of features that matter to catalog-heavy and wholesale stores – and it’s the main reason some brands stay.
| Feature | BigCommerce | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Custom product inputs | Built in Modifiers: engraving text, checkboxes, file uploads, add-on prices | Theme or app Line item properties in the theme, or an options app |
| Product reviews | Built in | Via app |
| Price lists for customer groups | Built in SKU-level, on Performance | B2B only Company catalogs; retail tiers need discounts, Functions or an app |
| Quantity-break pricing | Built in Bulk pricing rules per product | B2B or discounts Volume pricing in B2B catalogs; discounts or Functions for retail |
| Several storefronts from one admin | Built in Multi-Storefront | Separate stores Expansion stores for one brand, kept in sync by an app or integration; separate brands need separate Plus contracts |
| Accelerated checkout | Wallets such as PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay through payment providers | Shop Pay Built in, alongside the same wallets |
| Selling in many countries from one store | Multi-currency, with separate storefronts for languages and regional pricing | Built in Shopify Markets |
If your store leans on modifiers, group price lists or bulk pricing, a move to Shopify Plus means rebuilding them – as theme code, Shopify Functions or an app – so they belong in the migration scope, and any app fees belong in the cost comparison.
How much can you change – checkout, catalog and URLs?
Here the trade-off is control versus upkeep. BigCommerce hands developers more raw control; Shopify Plus offers fixed extension points that Shopify maintains for you.
| Area | BigCommerce | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout | Full code Fork the open-source React checkout or build on the Checkout SDK – you maintain the fork, and a changed card flow adds PCI scope | Extension points Checkout UI extensions, branding API, web pixels and Shopify Functions – Shopify maintains the checkout and Shop Pay |
| Catalog | Options plus modifiers; up to 600 SKUs and 200 custom fields per product; nested categories and a brand field | 3 options and up to 2,048 variants per product; metafields and metaobjects; collections plus navigation menus |
| URLs | Any path /blue-widget/ at the root, for example | Fixed paths /products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/ – almost every URL changes in a move |
Checkout
BigCommerce ships a one-page checkout and lets developers fork its open-source checkout, written in React, or build their own on its Checkout SDK. That is full code-level control. The price is upkeep: your fork has to keep pace with BigCommerce’s updates, and once a custom checkout changes how card payments flow, you can no longer rely on BigCommerce’s PCI attestation alone – that part of compliance becomes yours.
Shopify Plus gives no access to checkout code. You customize it through Checkout UI extensions, the branding API, web pixels and Shopify Functions for discount, shipping, payment and validation logic – and only Plus can extend the information, shipping and payment steps.
Shopify maintains and tests the checkout itself, and Shop Pay is built in. That covers most real requirements, but not a checkout whose steps you need to redesign from scratch.
Catalog
BigCommerce combines variant options with modifiers, allows up to 600 SKUs per product and up to 200 custom fields per product. Categories nest, and brand is a field of its own.
Shopify allows 3 options and up to 2,048 variants per product, with extra data in metafields and metaobjects. Collections – hand-picked or rule-based – replace categories, and hierarchy lives in navigation menus. Products with more than 3 variant options are the biggest scope driver when a BigCommerce store moves.
URLs
BigCommerce lets a product or category live at any URL – /blue-widget/ at the root, for example. Shopify fixes the paths: /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/. Almost every product and category URL changes in a move, so the redirect map decides whether your rankings survive it.
Which is better for B2B – B2B Edition or Shopify B2B?
Both platforms handle serious B2B, packaged differently. BigCommerce sells B2B Edition, an add-on to its Performance plan with custom pricing. Shopify put its core B2B features on every paid plan on April 2, 2026, and keeps the scale features for Plus.
| Need | BigCommerce B2B Edition | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Company accounts | Companies with buyer roles and multi-level hierarchies | Companies with multiple buyers and locations – on every paid plan |
| Company pricing and catalogs | Account pricing and SKU-level price lists | Up to 3 B2B catalogs on every paid plan; more, assigned to specific companies and locations, on Plus |
| Volume pricing and quantity rules | Built in | Built in On every paid plan |
| Quotes | Quote engine Quotes convert to orders | Draft orders Quote workflows beyond that via an app |
| Payment terms | Net terms, purchase orders and credit management per account | Net terms and vaulted cards on every paid plan; deposits, partial payments and per-fulfillment payment requests on Plus |
| Buyer self-service | Buyer portal Invoices, shopping lists, quick order and reorder | Customer accounts Order history and B2B checkout; invoice portals and shopping lists via apps |
| Sales reps ordering for buyers | Built in Reps act on behalf of a company | Draft orders Staff place orders for a company location |
| Custom B2B logic | APIs and an open-source buyer portal | Shopify Functions, checkout extensions and expansion stores on Plus |
| Licensing | Add-on, priced by quote | Included |
Feature names from BigCommerce’s B2B Edition pages and Shopify’s B2B features by plan, checked October 2026.
B2B Edition is the more complete buyer portal out of the box – quotes, invoices and shopping lists without extra apps. Shopify’s B2B costs nothing extra and covers most wholesale programs: company accounts, catalogs, net terms and volume pricing.
If your buyers depend on negotiated quotes, an invoice portal or multi-level approvals, map how each would work on Shopify before you decide – the free migration assessment flags the ones that would need an app or a custom build. ERP-driven pricing and credit limits usually run through an integration either way – see commerce integrations, and the CleanFlow case study for catalog and cross-border B2B on Shopify.
Apps, developers and AI – how big is the gap?
This is the strongest case for Shopify Plus, and the one BigCommerce can’t close by adding features.
18,000–25,000
Shopify App Store apps (third‑party count)
1,000–1,300
BigCommerce marketplace apps (usual estimate)
Apps and developers
Third-party trackers counted roughly 18,000 to 25,000 apps in the Shopify App Store in 2026; BigCommerce’s marketplace is usually put at 1,000 to 1,300. Most categories exist on both. Niche needs – a specific 3PL, loyalty model or marketplace connector – are far more likely to be covered on Shopify, often by several competing apps.
The same goes for people. Shopify has the larger pool of agencies, freelancers and in-house candidates, so specialists are easier to hire and to replace. BigCommerce specialists exist, but there are fewer of them.
AI and new features
Shopify builds AI into every admin: Sidekick, an assistant that analyzes the store and carries out tasks with your approval, and Shopify Magic for content. Agentic Storefronts, announced in December 2025 and rolling out through 2026, let merchants list and sell products in AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. Shopify announces new features twice a year in its Editions releases.
BigCommerce announced its own assistant, BigCommerce Companion, in April 2026, alongside conversational search. To reach AI shopping channels such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, it relies on Feedonomics, a feed-management business owned by its parent company, Commerce.com (formerly BigCommerce Holdings).
For most stores, AI is a tiebreaker rather than a reason to move: both can put your catalog in front of AI shopping assistants – Shopify from its own admin, BigCommerce through Feedonomics.
Headless
Both support headless builds. Shopify pairs Hydrogen, its React framework, with Oxygen hosting; BigCommerce offers Catalyst, a Next.js storefront, with Makeswift for visual editing. Headless is rarely what decides between the two – headless commerce covers when it is worth it at all.
Thinking of moving from BigCommerce?
Price the move against what you’d gain, not against BigCommerce’s subscription. OUXP, a Shopify Plus Partner since 2019 with 300+ projects delivered, moves BigCommerce stores to Shopify Plus, and our free assessment needs no access to your store. Within 2 business days an engineer sends a written platform verdict, timeline band, cost band and the 2–3 risks most likely to complicate your move – and says so if staying is the better call.
What a BigCommerce move involves
SaaS to SaaS means no servers to unpick. Products, customers, order history, reviews, blog posts and pages export cleanly through BigCommerce’s APIs. The work sits in six places:
- Options and modifiers. Products with more than 3 variant options are split into linked products, or their non-stock choices move into metafields; modifiers become line item properties or app-driven options. You approve the mapping before any data moves.
- Custom fields, brands and categories. Custom fields become metafields, brands become the vendor field or metaobjects, and nested categories become collections plus navigation menus.
- URLs and SEO. Almost every URL changes, so a per-pattern 301 map, carried-over metadata and structured data, and ranking monitoring after launch are part of the job.
- Pricing rules. Customer-group price lists, bulk pricing and B2B Edition workflows are rebuilt as B2B catalogs, discounts or Shopify Functions.
- Theme. Stencil themes don’t transfer, so the storefront is rebuilt in Liquid – as a faithful copy of your design or as a redesign.
- Apps and integrations. Every app is mapped to a Shopify app, a native feature or a custom build, and ERP, CRM and 3PL connections are reconnected and tested before cutover.
Customer passwords don’t move: BigCommerce doesn’t export them, and Shopify can’t import passwords from any platform. A new Shopify store uses Shopify’s customer accounts, so returning customers sign in with a one-time code sent by email – no password to reset and no activation invite to send. Gift certificate balances get their own migration step.
Typical range: $30,000–$70,000 over 4–12 weeks – along with WooCommerce, one of the two shortest paths to Shopify Plus we run. A single storefront with products that fit Shopify’s 3 options lands near 4 weeks; B2B Edition workflows, heavy modifiers, ERP integrations or several storefronts push it toward 12. The assessment gives you bands; after a deeper review with read-only access under NDA, the price and timeline are fixed in writing before work starts – and SEO preservation is always included.
On a BigCommerce contract, count back from the renewal date: discovery, 4–12 weeks of delivery and a buffer, without launching in your peak season.
Honest note
BigCommerce is a good platform. If your store runs well, your apps cover what you need and the platform fee is the deciding factor, stay. Revisit the question when you hit a missing app, a hiring problem, or an international or B2B roadmap that gets expensive on BigCommerce.
And if you sell under roughly $1M–$2M a year with a simple catalog, price standard Shopify too – its core B2B features have been on every paid plan since April 2026. Plus earns its premium when you need checkout-step extensions, custom Shopify Functions, expansion stores or higher API limits.
BigCommerce vs Shopify Plus questions
Short answers to what BigCommerce merchants ask us most. Something else? Ask an engineer.
Is BigCommerce cheaper than Shopify Plus?
On platform fees, usually yes. As of October 2026, BigCommerce’s Performance plan is quoted individually from $1,499/month billed annually, while Shopify Plus costs $2,300/month on a three-year term or $2,500/month on a one-year term. Shopify also charges 0.20% per order if you keep a third-party gateway. The case for Plus is conversion, apps and engineering time saved – if the platform fee decides it, staying on BigCommerce is reasonable.
Does Shopify Plus charge a fee for using our own payment gateway?
Yes: 0.20% of each order processed through a third-party gateway, on top of your processor’s own fees, and nothing extra with Shopify Payments. BigCommerce charges no such fee with its embedded providers – including Stripe, Adyen, PayPal Braintree, Checkout.com and Worldpay – or with any provider on a Performance contract; its lower plans pay 0.6–2.0% on other gateways. For a store processing $5M a year through its own gateway, Shopify’s fee comes to $10,000 a year.
Is BigCommerce or Shopify Plus better for SEO?
Both rank well; they differ in control. BigCommerce lets products and categories live at any URL. Shopify fixes the paths to /products/, /collections/ and /pages/, but generates the sitemap automatically and lets you edit robots.txt. Page speed on both depends mostly on the theme and app scripts. For a store that moves, the real SEO risk is the URL change itself: a per-pattern 301 map, carried-over metadata and ranking monitoring decide the outcome.
Which platform lets us customize the checkout more?
BigCommerce, in raw terms. Developers can fork its open-source checkout or build one on the Checkout SDK and change anything – at the cost of maintaining that code and, if the card payment flow changes, taking on more PCI scope. Shopify Plus allows no code changes, but checkout extensions, the branding API and Shopify Functions cover most requirements, and Shopify maintains the checkout and Shop Pay. BigCommerce wins only if your checkout needs steps those extension points can’t express.
Is BigCommerce B2B Edition better than Shopify B2B?
B2B Edition goes deeper out of the box: quotes that convert to orders, an invoice portal, shopping lists and sales-rep ordering, sold as an add-on to the Performance plan. Shopify’s core B2B – company accounts, up to 3 catalogs, volume pricing, net terms and a B2B checkout – has been on every paid plan since April 2, 2026, and Plus adds company-specific catalogs, deposits and partial payments. Choose by mapping your actual buyer workflows to each.
Can we keep several storefronts if we move to Shopify Plus?
For one brand, yes. Shopify Markets runs several countries, currencies, languages and domains from one store – the usual answer for international storefronts. Shopify Plus also includes 9 expansion stores for the same brand, each with its own admin, kept in sync by an app or integration. Separate brands need a separate Plus contract each, as of October 2026. BigCommerce’s Multi-Storefront runs several brands’ storefronts from one admin – a real point in its favor.
Is migrating from BigCommerce to Shopify Plus difficult?
It’s one of the more predictable migrations. Both platforms are SaaS with clean API access to products, customers and orders, so there are no servers to unpick. Most moves take 4–12 weeks and cost $30,000–$70,000. The effort sits in product options and modifiers, rebuilt pricing rules, redirecting every URL and replacing apps – almost every BigCommerce app has a Shopify equivalent, usually several. SEO preservation is included in every OUXP migration.
