Shopify Plus by industry

Commerce engineering by industry

OUXP builds, migrates and supports Shopify and Shopify Plus stores for fashion, beauty, health and wellness, industrial, CPG, food and beverage, luxury and B2B brands, with 300+ projects delivered since 2011. Stores in each industry break in a different place – size runs, subscriptions, spec-heavy catalogs, trade pricing. Below, for each one: where it breaks, what we build and the proof.

What changes from one industry to the next

Every brand gets the same Shopify. Four answers about your business decide how we build on it, so we settle them before anyone designs a page. If your industry isn’t listed below, these are the questions we start with.

  • 01

    The shape of your catalog

Sizes and colors, shades, technical specs or made-to-order options. This decides how products, variants and metafields are modeled – and whether Shopify’s limit of 3 options per product gets in the way.

  • 02

    Who sees which price

One retail price, subscriber discounts, trade or member pricing, or a price list per company. This decides between discounts, customer segments and B2B catalogs.

  • 03

    How customers buy again

Subscriptions, one-tap reorders, quotes or an account rep. This decides the subscription app, what customer accounts show and which rules the checkout enforces.

  • 04

    Which system holds the truth

Stock, prices and orders often live in an ERP, PIM or 3PL. This decides the integrations, how often data syncs and what happens when a sync fails.

Fashion and apparel

Size and color runs multiply variants quickly, drops pack traffic into the first minutes of a launch, and every wrong size comes back as a return. Most fixes live in the product model and the product page, not in more apps.

Where it breaksWhat we build
Size, color and fit need more than Shopify’s 3 options per productColors as separate products, grouped into one listing with swatches, so each color keeps its own URL, photos and stock. Shopify now allows 2,048 variants per product – the limit that bites is the option count.
Shoppers can’t tell which size to buy, and returns followSize charts kept once per product type and shown on every product that uses them, fit notes stored with each product, and size selectors that show stock before the tap.
On drop day the theme slows down and a few buyers clear the stockA pre-launch pass on theme code and app scripts, products scheduled to publish on time, and per-customer quantity limits enforced at checkout by a Shopify Function (custom logic Shopify runs in the cart and checkout), so one buyer can’t take a whole size run.
Multipacks and bundles oversell or throw stock counts offBundle pages and build-your-own packs on Shopify’s bundle model, where every item in the bundle deducts its own inventory.
Big collections with many filters load slowly on phonesFilters on color family, size and fit built from product metafields in Shopify’s Search & Discovery app, and collection pages that load images as the shopper scrolls.

Combined listings – Shopify’s way to show separate products as one listing – need Shopify Plus. On other plans we link the products with metafields instead. Quantity limits run as a Shopify Function – through a public app on any plan, or in your own custom app on Shopify Plus. Platform facts as of October 2026.

Beauty and cosmetics

Beauty stores live on repeat purchases, kits and shade choices made on a phone screen. Their product pages also carry heavy media – video, swatches, before-and-after images and reviews – so the product page is usually where a beauty store loses speed.

Replenishment depends on customers remembering to reorderSubscriptions with Recharge or Skio on Shopify’s own checkout, and a customer portal where subscribers skip, swap or change frequency without emailing support.
Shoppers can’t judge a shade on screenShade finders: swatch grids that use your true-color product photos, a short matching quiz or side-by-side compare, and the chosen shade saved to the customer’s account for one-tap reorders.
Kits, gift sets and free-gift offers break stock counts or stack wronglyKits that deduct each item’s stock, build-your-own sets, and gift-with-purchase and tiered offers written as Shopify Functions with clear stacking rules.
Ingredient lists and usage notes drift out of date across pagesIngredients, how-to-use steps and warnings stored as structured product data, so one edit updates every page that shows them.
Video, swatches and review widgets slow the product pageImages sized for each device from Shopify’s CDN, video that loads when it is played, and review and UGC widgets that load after the main content – checked against Core Web Vitals.

Subscriptions and bundles work on every Shopify plan. Gift and tiered offers run as Shopify Functions – through a public app on any plan, or in your own custom app on Shopify Plus. A free-sample picker or other custom content inside the checkout steps before payment needs Shopify Plus.

Health and wellness

Supplement, sports nutrition, personal care and pet wellness brands sell on trust and on refills. What they may say about a product is limited, some products can’t ship everywhere, and many sell to practitioners and gyms alongside consumers.

Product claims and required disclaimers must match on every pageApproved claims and disclaimers kept as structured content and assigned by product type – change the wording once and every product that uses it updates.
Refill customers drop off between ordersSubscribe-and-save on Shopify’s checkout with Recharge or Skio, delivery intervals that match a 30, 60 or 90-day supply, and renewal reminders.
Practitioners, gyms and retailers need wholesale prices consumers never seeA trade channel in the same store: applications with approval, company accounts, a wholesale catalog with quantity rules, and net terms for approved accounts.
Some products can’t ship to every state or countryRestrictions checked in the cart and at checkout by a Shopify Function, with a clear message to the shopper – instead of orders cancelled after payment.
Shoppers want proof of sourcing, testing and certificationLab reports and certificates linked to each product, so the right document appears on the right product page and is easy to replace when a batch changes.

Shipping restrictions run as a Shopify Function – through a public app on any plan, or in your own custom app on Shopify Plus.

What we don’t build: regulated healthcare systems

We build stores for wellness brands. We don’t build clinical systems that hold patient records or prescriptions, and we don’t give regulatory advice: your compliance team or counsel decides what the store may claim, and we make sure the store applies that on every page.

Industrial and manufacturing

Industrial catalogs are deep, technical and priced per account. Buyers search by specification, order in case packs, ask for quotes on large orders and expect the price and stock they see to match your ERP.

CPG, food and beverage

Consumer packaged goods (CPG) sell on volume and promotions. Brands run DTC next to retail and distributor accounts, reorders carry the margin, and food and drink add delivery rules a standard checkout doesn’t know about.

Luxury

Luxury pages have to feel editorial and still load fast. Some prices are only for the trade or VIP clients, and many orders start with a sample, a custom spec or a conversation.

B2B commerce

Since April 2, 2026, Shopify’s core B2B features work on every paid plan, so B2B alone is no longer a reason to buy Shopify Plus. Plus earns its cost when wholesale needs company-specific catalogs, more than 3 catalogs, deposits or your own checkout rules.

Which B2B features need Shopify Plus?

Short answer: 5 things – more than 3 B2B catalogs or catalogs for specific companies; deposits and partial payments; discount, delivery and payment rules in your own custom app; custom fields in the checkout steps; and a separate wholesale store for the same brand on the same plan. Everything else in the table works on Basic, Grow and Advanced.

Questions about building for your industry

Plans, subscriptions, B2B, drops and case studies. Something else? Ask an engineer.

Does my industry need Shopify Plus?

Often not. Subscriptions, bundles, size and shade selectors, Shopify Markets and core B2B work on every paid plan – B2B since April 2, 2026. Plus earns its cost for custom fields or rules in the checkout steps before payment, your own Shopify Functions in a custom app, combined listings for fashion catalogs, more than 3 B2B catalogs, company-specific catalogs and deposits. As of October 2026, Plus starts at $2,300/month on a three-year term or $2,500/month on a one-year term. See the Shopify Plus pricing guide.

Do you only work with these 7 industries?

No. These are the industries we build for most often, and the ones where we can show the work. We also build for brands that sell furniture and home goods, and for any store with the same needs – a complex catalog, more than one price list, repeat orders or an ERP behind the store. How you sell decides the build more than what you sell, so start by telling us how your catalog and pricing work.

Can wholesale and retail customers buy from the same Shopify store?

Yes – that is how Shopify B2B works by default. Wholesale buyers sign in to a company account and see their B2B catalog, prices, quantity rules and payment terms, while retail shoppers see the normal store; a catalog for each individual company needs Shopify Plus. A separate wholesale store makes sense when that channel needs its own storefront, apps or team; on Shopify Plus it can be an expansion store in the same contract, as long as it sells the same brand – a separate brand needs its own Plus contract. We recommend one store unless there is a clear reason for two.

Which subscription apps do you work with?

Mostly Recharge and Skio, both running on Shopify’s own checkout. We set up the plans, the customer portal where subscribers skip, swap or change frequency, subscription bundles and the integrations around them. When a brand switches subscription app or platform, whether subscribers keep their saved cards depends on where those payment details are stored – we check that before quoting, because it decides how many subscribers would need to re-enter a card.

Can our store handle a product drop or a big promotion?

Shopify’s infrastructure carries the traffic; what usually fails is the theme and the apps around it. Before a launch we check the pages the drop will hit, remove or defer scripts that slow them, confirm discount and quantity-limit rules, and make sure stock and integrations keep up with the order rate. If something breaks during the launch, the emergency line is open 24/7. During business hours (Mon–Fri, 9 AM–9 PM ET) every request gets a first response within 30–60 minutes; outside them, clients with the 24/7 emergency add-on get a first response within 2 hours, and one-time requests are answered as engineers are available – call +1 (818) 651-3226 rather than email.

Do you have case studies in our industry?

Two are published: CleanFlow (industrial supply, Canada) and Wall Snobs (luxury wallcoverings, USA). For fashion, beauty, wellness and food and beverage, the proof today is what merchants such as True Classic, Beauty From Bees, Pet Wellness Direct and Small Beer wrote in their reviews; for a move to Shopify, Lordstown Motors reviewed the store migration we delivered. OUXP is rated 4.9/5 from 263 reviews on the Shopify Partner Directory. Read the client reviews.

We sell B2B on Magento. How long does a move to Shopify Plus take?

Most B2B and mid-complexity Magento migrations take 12–18 weeks; standard stores take 8–12 weeks and enterprise builds 18–24+ weeks. Magento migrations cost $50,000–$180,000. On Adobe Commerce, plan for 10–24+ weeks and $60,000–$200,000. Company accounts, price lists, payment terms and ERP connections are mapped before anything moves, and SEO preservation is included. A free migration assessment gives you timeline and cost bands within 2 business days; the price is fixed in writing before work starts.

Tell us what you sell

Whatever the industry, the first step is the same: tell us how your catalog, pricing and systems work today. An engineer – not a salesperson – replies within 30–60 minutes during business hours with a suggested first step.
