BigCommerce to Shopify Plus migration

OUXP moves BigCommerce stores to Shopify Plus for brands that need a bigger app ecosystem, a checkout they don’t maintain in code, B2B inside the core platform or a deeper pool of engineers to hire. Products, customers and order history come across intact, options and modifiers are rebuilt for Shopify’s product model, and a 301 map covering every URL is live at launch to protect your search rankings.

Why brands move from BigCommerce to Shopify Plus

BigCommerce is a capable SaaS platform, and brands rarely leave because it’s broken. They leave when growth runs into the limits around it, most often apps, talent, checkout or B2B.

  • 01

The app you need isn’t there

Shopify’s App Store is far larger than BigCommerce’s marketplace, so bundles, loyalty, subscriptions or post-purchase offers usually have several mature options instead of one or none.

  • 02

    A deeper bench of engineers

More agencies, freelancers and in-house candidates know Shopify, so it’s easier to hire, change suppliers or bring work in-house later.

  • 03

    Checkout without code to maintain

Deep checkout changes on BigCommerce mean maintaining your own copy of its checkout code. Shopify Plus extends its checkout with UI extensions and Shopify Functions, with Shop Pay built in, and Shopify keeps it current.

  • 04

    B2B inside the core platform

Advanced B2B on BigCommerce lives in B2B Edition, an add-on with its own buyer portal. Shopify’s companies, catalogs, payment terms and quotes share the retail store’s admin, checkout and apps.

  • 05

    International selling from one store

BigCommerce handles international selling well with Multi-Storefront. Shopify’s edge is that Markets keeps currencies, languages, domains, pricing and duties per country inside one store and one app stack, with up to 9 expansion stores on Plus when a region, wholesale or outlet channel of the same brand needs its own store. Separate brands need separate Plus contracts.

  • 06

New BigCommerce pricing since June 2026

BigCommerce renamed its plans, lowered the sales limits that trigger automatic upgrades and added a fee of up to 2% on self-serve plans for payment providers outside its embedded list; contracted Performance stores kept their terms. Compare total cost at your volume – Shopify Plus isn’t always cheaper.

BigCommerce vs Shopify Plus: what changes for your team

Both are hosted platforms, so hosting, patches and PCI compliance stay off your plate either way. The differences are in the product model, apps, AI, checkout, B2B and pricing.

When staying on BigCommerce is the right call

Stay when the platform fee at your sales volume is the deciding factor, when you rely on features BigCommerce includes that would take several paid apps on Shopify, or when your current setup works and a migration wouldn’t pay for itself yet. If that describes your store, the free migration assessment says so.

What moves to Shopify Plus – and what gets rebuilt

BigCommerce’s APIs export your catalog, customers and full order history, so no database dump or server access is needed. The theme, apps and custom logic can’t transfer between platforms, so they are replaced or rebuilt. Discovery inventories every item, and you sign off the list before the build starts.

Migrated

  • Products and variants
  • Categories as collections
  • Brands
  • Custom fields as metafields
  • Images and videos
  • Inventory
  • Customers and addresses
  • Customer groups
  • Order history
  • Product reviews
  • Gift certificate balances
  • Coupon codes
  • Blog posts
  • Web pages
  • SEO metadata
  • URLs and existing 301 redirects

Internal IDs don’t carry over between platforms; the relationships do – each order with its customer and products, each product with its variants and images. Old order and customer numbers that support, finance or connected systems rely on are kept for reference.

Rebuilt or reconnected

  • Stencil theme, as a Shopify theme
  • Modifiers and option rules
  • Promotions
  • Checkout customizations
  • B2B Edition workflows
  • Apps, as Shopify apps
  • Script Manager tags
  • ERP
  • CRM
  • Email marketing
  • Payment and shipping providers
  • Search and filtering
  • Loyalty programs
  • Marketplace listings
  • Analytics and tracking

Passwords can’t move – BigCommerce doesn’t export them – so returning customers sign in with an emailed one-time code from launch day. Stored payment details behind subscriptions and data held in third-party apps – loyalty points, wishlists – are investigated in discovery, never assumed.

Your Stencil theme can’t run on Shopify, so we recreate your current design faithfully or use the move to modernize it, as agreed in the quote.

A headless storefront, such as one built on Catalyst, moves to a Shopify theme or stays headless on Shopify’s Storefront API – see headless commerce.

What actually takes the time in a BigCommerce migration

SaaS to SaaS makes the data the easy part. These five areas decide whether a project lands near 4 weeks or 12, so we scope each one before quoting – not halfway through the build.

  1. Options and modifiers don’t map one to one

    How we solve it

BigCommerce separates variant options, where each combination is a SKU (up to 600 per product), from modifiers – text fields, checkboxes, file uploads and add-on pick lists that can change the price without creating a SKU. Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants but only three options per product.

    • Variant options become Shopify options; products with more than three are split into linked products, or non-stock choices move into metafields.
    • Modifiers that collect input, like engraving text, become line item properties that travel with the order.
    • Priced add-ons become bundles, an options app or, on Shopify Plus, a cart transform Function.
    • Price and weight rules are flattened into per-variant values.

You approve the product model before anything is built.

  2. Every URL changes – and BigCommerce lets you set any of them

    How we solve it

BigCommerce allows a custom URL on every page, so stores often have products at the root (/blue-widget/), category-based paths and years of manual 301s. Shopify uses fixed /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ paths.

    • Every URL is exported together with your existing redirect list.
    • Redirect chains are flattened, so old links go straight to the final page.
    • A per-pattern 301 map is built; faceted-search URLs are decided pattern by pattern, never with a blanket redirect.
    • Titles, meta descriptions and canonicals carry over, and structured data is rebuilt.
    • Rankings and crawl errors are monitored through cutover.
  3. Categories, brands and custom fields need a new home

    How we solve it

A BigCommerce product can sit in many nested categories, and brands have pages of their own. Shopify collections are flat.

    • The category tree becomes collections plus nested menus.
    • Brands become vendor-based collections or brand pages built from metaobjects.
    • Custom fields become metafields your theme displays and your filters use.

You approve the category, brand and custom-field map before any data moves.

  4. B2B Edition moves to Shopify’s built-in B2B

    How we solve it

Company accounts, buyer roles, price lists, net terms and quotes map to Shopify companies with locations and buyer permissions, catalogs with price lists and volume pricing, payment terms and draft-order quotes.

Core B2B has run on every paid Shopify plan since April 2, 2026, and sales reps can be limited to the companies they’re assigned, placing orders for them as draft orders. Plus adds more than three catalogs, catalogs assigned to specific companies, deposits, and B2B rules built with checkout extensions and Shopify Functions. Shopping lists and buyer-side approval chains aren’t built in, so we scope them up front – usually an app or a light custom build.

  5. Apps, promotions and checkout logic are rebuilt, not copied

    How we solve it

BigCommerce apps, Script Manager tags and checkout customizations don’t transfer. Many vendors run on both platforms, so most app swaps are like for like; the rest become native features or custom code.

Rules from BigCommerce’s promotion engine are rebuilt as Shopify discounts and discount combinations, or as Discount Functions where the logic goes further. Changes made with BigCommerce’s Checkout SDK are rebuilt as checkout UI extensions.

What replaces your BigCommerce apps and features?

Every app and built-in feature is replaced by a Shopify feature, an app or custom code – or retired because you no longer need it. These are the most common mappings; your full list is itemized during discovery.

App and feature mapping: what replaces what
On BigCommerceOn Shopify Plus
Built-in product reviews, Yotpo or StampedJudge.me, Okendo or the same vendors’ Shopify apps, with ratings and review history imported

B2B EditionShopify’s built-in B2B: companies, catalogs, payment terms and quotes; shopping lists through an app
Multi-StorefrontShopify Markets, or expansion stores for regional, wholesale or outlet storefronts of the same brand. A Multi-Storefront setup that runs several brands needs one Shopify Plus contract per brand.
Channel Manager listings on Amazon, eBay and WalmartShopify Marketplace Connect, plus the Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram channels for ads and shopping
Klaviyo, HubSpot, Gorgias, ShipStation, EasyPost or ShipperHQThe same vendors’ Shopify apps or APIs, with lists, flows and settings reconnected

Payment gateways such as Stripe, Braintree or PayPalShopify Payments with Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus PayPal; other gateways add a Shopify transaction fee
ERP connectors (NetSuite, SAP, Acumatica)Celigo, Boomi or custom Admin API middleware – see commerce integrations

Common mappings, not a fixed list. Apps and Shopify features as of October 2026; app subscriptions are billed by their vendors and are not part of the migration price.

How long does a BigCommerce migration take?

4–12 weeks – one of the two shortest paths to Shopify Plus we run, along with WooCommerce. Where your store lands depends on complexity more than catalog size.

Closer to 4 weeks

  • A single storefront
  • Products that fit Shopify’s three options
  • Apps whose vendors also run on Shopify
  • Your current design recreated as a Shopify theme
  • Clean product and customer data

Closer to 12 weeks

  • B2B Edition workflows, price lists and customer groups
  • Many modifiers and option rules to restructure
  • ERP, PIM or OMS integrations
  • Checkout customizations or a headless storefront
  • Several storefronts to consolidate, or a full redesign

Running a second store on WooCommerce? WooCommerce to Shopify Plus migration

What does a BigCommerce migration cost?

Typically $30,000–$70,000, with a fixed price agreed in writing before work starts. On a BigCommerce contract? Start at least 3 months before the renewal date – the longest projects take 12 weeks – so you don’t pay for two platforms.

  • Not in the migration price: the Shopify Plus subscription (from $2,300/month on a three-year term, as of October 2026) and app subscriptions, billed by Shopify and each app’s vendor – the Shopify Plus pricing guide breaks down the running costs.
  • What moves the price most: options and modifiers to restructure, B2B Edition workflows, checkout customizations, integrations and design scope.
  • SEO preservation – URL map, 301s, metadata, structured data and post-launch monitoring – is always included.
  • How the price is fixed: the free assessment gives a band without store access; the fixed quote follows a deeper review with read-only access under NDA.

How a BigCommerce migration runs

Seven steps, each with an output you check before the next one starts. Your team’s time goes mainly into approving the maps, reviewing the build and signing off QA before the launch rehearsal.

  1. 1

    Discovery

Inventory products, options and modifiers, apps, Script Manager tags, integrations, URLs and redirects.

    Output: written inventory and plan

  2. 2

    Mapping

Decide where everything goes: product model, category and custom-field maps, app map and 301 map.

    Output: maps you approve

  3. 3

    Build

Theme, apps, discounts, Shopify Functions, checkout extensions and integrations, in a separate development store.

Output: a working store to review

  4. 4

    Pilot and reconcile

Import a representative sample, compare counts, totals, keys and links with BigCommerce, then fix and repeat.

    Output: reconciliation report

  5. 5

    QA and launch rehearsal

Test functionality, checkout, apps, integrations, SEO and page speed, take your team’s sign-off, then run the cutover end to end, including redirects, payments and order flow.

Output: signed-off store, tested cutover and rollback plan

  6. 6

    Launch

Freeze changes, import the final delta of orders and customers, switch the domain and verify checkout.

    Output: live store, verified

  7. 7

    Monitor and optimize

Watch orders, errors, rankings, support requests and Core Web Vitals, tune speed and conversion, then hand over to your team or to an OUXP retainer and maintenance plan.

    Output: handover

BigCommerce migration questions

Something else on your mind? Ask an engineer – first response within 30–60 minutes in business hours.

How long does a BigCommerce to Shopify Plus migration take?

4–12 weeks. A single BigCommerce storefront with products that fit Shopify’s three options, common apps and its current design recreated sits near the short end. B2B Edition workflows, many modifiers to restructure, ERP integration, checkout customizations or a full redesign push it toward 12 weeks. The free migration assessment places your store in that range, and a fixed timeline with milestones is agreed before work starts.

How much does a BigCommerce to Shopify Plus migration cost?

Most BigCommerce migrations cost $30,000–$70,000. Complexity moves the price more than catalog size: options and modifiers, B2B requirements, checkout logic, integrations and design scope. The free assessment gives you a cost band without store access, and the price is fixed in writing after a deeper review, before work starts. SEO preservation is always included. The Shopify Plus subscription and app fees are billed separately by Shopify and each vendor.

Will Shopify Plus cost more than BigCommerce to run?

Often, on platform fees alone. As of October 2026, Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term, high-volume stores move to a revenue-based fee, and using a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments adds a Shopify transaction fee, currently reported as 0.20%, on top of your processor’s fees. BigCommerce’s June 2026 changes lowered its sales caps and added a fee of up to 2% on self-serve plans for gateways outside its embedded list, so compare both at your volume. The case for moving is apps, checkout and speed of change – if price decides it, we’ll tell you to stay.

What happens to our BigCommerce product options and modifiers?

Variant options become Shopify options and variants – up to 2,048 variants per product, but only three options. Products with more options are split into linked products, or non-stock choices move into metafields. Modifiers that collect input, like engraving text or file uploads, become line item properties that reach the order. Add-ons that change the price become bundles, an options app or, on Shopify Plus, a cart transform Function – custom pricing logic that runs in Shopify’s cart. You approve the product model first.

We use BigCommerce B2B Edition – can Shopify handle our B2B?

Usually, yes. Company accounts, price lists, net terms, quotes and sales-rep assignments map to Shopify’s built-in B2B: companies with locations, catalogs with volume pricing, payment terms, draft-order quotes and sales staff limited to their assigned companies. Core B2B has been on every paid Shopify plan since April 2026; Plus adds more than three catalogs, company-specific catalogs and deposits. Shopping lists and buyer-side approval chains aren’t built in, so they are scoped up front as an app or a light custom build.

Will we lose search rankings when we leave BigCommerce?

Not if the redirects are right on launch day, though nobody can honestly promise rankings won’t move at all. BigCommerce lets every product, category, brand and page carry a custom URL – often at the root, like /blue-widget/ – while Shopify puts them under fixed /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ paths, so nearly every URL changes. We export the full URL set together with the 301s already saved in BigCommerce, flatten chains so old links reach the final page in one hop, and map faceted-search URLs pattern by pattern rather than sending them all to one page. Titles, meta descriptions and canonicals carry over, structured data is rebuilt, and rankings and crawl errors are monitored after launch. SEO preservation is part of every migration, never an add-on.

Can customer accounts and passwords move from BigCommerce?

Accounts, addresses and order history move, and customer groups become tags, segments or B2B companies. Passwords don’t, because BigCommerce doesn’t export them – and they aren’t needed. A new Shopify store uses Shopify’s customer accounts, where customers sign in with a one-time code sent by email; the older password-based accounts are no longer offered to new stores. We plan the launch emails with you so returning customers know how to sign in.

Do our BigCommerce apps have Shopify equivalents?

Almost always, and usually several. Many vendors, including Klaviyo, Yotpo, ShipStation and Avalara, run on both platforms, so those swaps are like for like. Features BigCommerce includes, such as product reviews and bulk pricing, become a Shopify app, a native feature or a Shopify Function. We map every app in discovery and agree the replacements with you before the build starts.
